It was a fun night!

We organize this stand-up open mic event every two weeks at Little Japan, located in Asakusabashi. Cheerful people from all around the world (this time NZ, UK, France, Indonesia, Thai, Taiwan, and Japan!) gather together each time in the cozy atmosphere of the hostel.

Participants each take turns talking in front of everyone. Some of them are used to doing stand-up comedy, and others not so much, but everyone enjoys their time sharing and making people laugh.

In Japan, stand-up comedy or open mic nights are not yet very popular. Japanese people love talking and laughing with colleagues or friends while drinking and often make fun of themselves or others, but not in front of an audience.

We (Funny Japan Project) are trying to spread the culture of stand-up comedy or open mic nights to everyone in Japan, not just for people who want to become comedians.

When you stand up and try to make everyone in front of you laugh, you can turn your bad luck or shortcomings into comedy! It’s like magic… It gives you a chance to create something positive from not so pleasant memories, instead of just being caught up in the situation.

Normally we tend to avoid expressing negative emotions, but actually, it helps to decrease tension!

Laughing and making people laugh is good for your health!

Let’s create a culture of stand-up comedy in Japan together! Come and join us! Book here for the next event at Little Japan, Asakusabashi.

Report: Guest House Comedy Night! English Stand-up Open Mic & Meet-up [Vol. 73]

Hello, everyone.
The Funny Japan Project had an open mic stand-up comedy event.
Guest House Comedy Night vol.73, held at Little Japan in Asakusabashi on November 10th, 2019.

Usually, about 15 people join this open mic event, but the organizer, Meshida, forgot to promote the event on Facebook and Meetup… So just 4 people came.
We all decided to do a comedy workshop instead, and we discussed our new jokes and got feedback on them from eachother.

We had non-comedian come – an Indian guy who was staying in the hostel (the show is organized in the hostel’s bar).
We made a joke for him.

“Great Britan colonized India for 200 years.
They are not good at colonizing.
Because Indian people still can’t speak English correctly.”

Next time I will definitely promote the event on social media and Meetup, so I hope many people come to the show!
If you want to try to do stand-up, please come on down and share your stories!

Check out here for the next event!!!

Report: Guest House Comedy Night! English Stand-up Open Mic & Meet-up [Vol. 72]

Hello, everyone.
Funny Japan Project held another open mic stand-up comedy event, the Guest House Comedy Night Vol. 72 at Little Japan in Asakusabashi, on October 20th, 2019.

Currently, Japan is hosting the Rugby World Cup. Even though our national team was playing against South Africa here in Japan, many people came to our show (and made fun of the Rugby World Cup).

My opening joke was:
Now, all Japanese are crazy about rugby – even though we don’t know the rules and we have never watched it before 2 weeks ago when the World Cup started!

The evening’s participants were from Japan, Taiwan, the USA, Germany, French and the UK. They weren’t all comedians, so we also had talkers share their own funny experiences.

If you want to try to do stand-up, or even just talk, please come on down and share your stories!

The tourists from the USA talked about our forefront technology (read: Japanese toilets) passionately. One shared an episode he had in which he couldn’t understand how to stop the bidet and washed his ass for 5 minutes. (lol)

This event is held on the second Friday of every month!!! Come and join us.

Locals, tourists !!
